To obtain a fiber-reactive azo dye having improved tinctorial power and fastness by diazotizing a specified compound and coupling the product of diazotization with a specified compound.
A compound represented by formula III and obtained by reacting 1mol equivalent of a compound represented by formula I with 1mol equivalent of a compound represented by the formula: Z-Hal is reacted with a compound represented by the formula: H-A to obtain a compound represented by formula IV or V. A diazonium salt compound obtained by diazotizing this compound is coupled with a compound represented by formula VI or VII to obtain an azo dye represented by formula VIII [wherein D is a residue of a benzene or naphthalene type diazo component; K is a group represented by formula IX (wherein M is H or an alkali metal; (a) and (b) are each 0 or 1, provided that M is H when (a) is 0; and is bonded to the azo group); R1 and R2 are each H or a (substituted) 1-6C alkyl; Y is bonded to the amino residue-NR1- or -NR2 or formual X (wherein R is a 1-4C alkyl or the like; A is phenylamino or the like; C is (a); G is phenylene; B is a 1-6 C alkylene or the like; X is β-hydroxyethyl or the like; and Z is a heterocyclic fiber-reactive residue).
