PURPOSE: To provide the fiber for transmission of a laser beam for a medical treatment which can emit the laser beam from the outer peripheral part of a front end.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 1 which consists of a Ge-doped quartz core and a quartz clad and has a refractive index profile of a GI type is prepd. The front end 2 of such fiber is stretched slender into a tapered shape. The incident laser beam on the optical fiber 1 is leaked and emitted from the outer periphery of the front end 2 by adjusting the length and outside diameter of the stretched part. The laser beam emits in the radial direction and is, therefore, effective if such optical fiber 1 is used for treatment of the lesion of, for example, the inside wall surface of a vein.
