Since a structure where an electron discharge element and a gate electrode are arranged in a cathode electrode is employed, a field electron emission lamp having a function where the cathode electrode can extract luminescence into the lamp to the outside of the lamp can be manufactured. When this field electron emission lamp is used, luminescence from the phosphor layer into the lamp can be extracted efficiently to the outside of the lamp, and thereby emission efficiency of the lamp can be improved.
