To provide a filament winding apparatus capable of easily removing the unnecessary part of yarn.

The filament winding apparatus is equipped with a guide head 13 for supplying yarn in order to wind the same around a mandrel M, a grasping mechanism 7 for grasping the yarn at the beginning of winding or at the time of completion of winding, a yarn cutting mechanism 15 for cutting the part of the yarn between the mandrel and the grasping mechanism and an unnecessary part removing mechanism 17 for directly grasping the unnecessary part TS of the yarn remaining in the grasping mechanism to remove the same. The grasping mechanism is equipped with a first pawl 37 positioned on the side of the mandrel at the time of grasping of the yarn and formed so as to become narrow toward the leading end thereof, and a second pawl 39 positioned on the side opposite to the mandrel and formed so as to become wide toward the leading end thereof and, after the unnecessary part of the yarn is grasped by the pawls, the pawls are rotated to remove the unnecessary part.
