A file storage device carries files into and out of a file cabinet by means of a transfer unit. The files 6 have a boxlike shape and comprise holders 6a to 6c of different thicknesses. The thinnest holder 6a forms guide portions 9 by the upper and lower ends, and the other thicker holders 6b and 6c have at the upper and lower ends guide portions 9 of a width equal to the thickness of the thinnest holder 6a. The cabinet unit 1 has recessed guide grooves 8 having the substantially same width as the guide portions 9 of the holders 6 along the top and bottom of each shelf space. The files are stored in the file cabinet unit with their guide portions 9 at the upper and lower ends of the holders 6a to 6c fitted in the guide grooves 8 of the cabinet unit 1.
