Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a filler-containing paper excellent in paper strength and opacity by using as an inner additive or an outer additive the aqueous dispersion of polymer fine particles produced by polymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated monomer or diethylenic monomer in the presence of a mercapto group-containing cationic polyvinyl alcohol as a dispersant.
CONSTITUTION: Vinyl acetate and 3-methacrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium chloride are copolymerized in the presence of a thiol acid, and subsequently saponified to form a cationic polyvinyl alcohol having a mercapto group. In the presence of the mercapto group-containing cationic polyvinyl alcohol as a dispersant, an ethylenic unsaturated monomer or diethylenic monomer, e.g. styrene, is emulsion-polymerized, dispersion-polymerized or suspension- polymerized to obtain the aqueous dispersion of cationic styrene polymer fine particles. The aqueous dispersion is used as an inner additive or an outer additive on the production of paper.
