PURPOSE: To obtain a film-formable chelate-forming resin being capable of used as a nonpolluting surface treatment as a substitute for an inorganic surface treatment and having excellent anticorrosiveness by forming a resin having specified chelate-forming groups.
CONSTITUTION: This resin is the one having in the molecule at least one chelate- forming group represented by formula II (wherein R3 is H, methyl or a direct bond) and obtained by the addition reaction of the amino group of a compound represented by formula I (wherein R1 is H, a halogen, nitro, nitroso, cyano or a 18 C or lower (oxygenous) organic group; and R2 is H or methyl) with the 1,2-epoxy group of a compound having a 1,2-epoxy group. Desirable examples of the base resins include an acrylic resin, an epoxy resin, a polyester resin, an alkyd resin, and a silicon-containing resin. this resin is used after it is converted into water-soluble or water-dispersible one by neutralizing it with an acid to an amine value of e.g. 30-180.
