PURPOSE: To obtain the filter element having excellent filtering efficiency by winding a continuous multifilament assemblage as a filtering layer, consisting of a crimped and polygonal sectional shape of filaments, around a cylindrical supporter made of a metal net or a porous plate.

CONSTITUTION: The metal net or the porous plate of a corrosion-resistant material, e.g., stainless steel, plastic, ceramic material, etc., is formed into a cylindrical shape to manufacture the porous cylindrical supporter 3 with great numbers of the holes 2. And, the supporter 3 is wound with the assemblage of the continuous multifilament 4 of polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, etc., consisting of crimped and polygonal shape of the filament 1 having a D/d ratio of 2 to 4 where D is the diameter of the circumscribed circle of section and d is the diameter of the inscribed circle, and then covered with a precoating agent of a powdered cation exchange resin or anionic exchange resin to obtain the filter element having excellent filtering efficiency for impurities.
