The filter material 4 is embodied in a fiber laminate structure consisting of ceramics or heat-resistant metal, a honeycomb structure or foam structure, and a ceramic coating film (may include a surface unevenness 23a) 23 consisting of ceramics or heat-resistant metal is formed on the solid portion of the filter material 4, i.e., that surface portion of the base material 22 of filter which contacts with the fluid such as exhaust gas. The coating film 23 is made of ceramics produced through pyrolysis of CVD or organic silicon polymer, and a number of catalyst particles 35 are carried by the coating film 23.
