PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter medium for molten aluminum free from the secondary contamination of molten aluminum since impurities are not eluted even in the contact with the molten aluminum, high in the strength of the filter medium due to the high bonding force between aggregate, capable of being stably used over a long period, almost constant in the passing quantity of the molten aluminum since the clogging is hardly occurs and having stable crystal structure.
SOLUTION: This filter medium for molten aluminum is composed of a sintered compact of a mixture of 5-25 pts.wt. inorganic binder consisting of 85-98 wt.% crystal powder composed of Al2O3 and MgO and having spinel crystal structure and 15-2 wt.% amorphous glass component with 100 pts.wt. an alumina aggregate particle, the crystallinity of the spinel crystal in the sintered compact is ≥10% and/or an amorphous glass phase, which is partially bonded with the spinel crystal particles in the sintered compact, contains B2O3 and SiO2 in the ratio B2O3/SiO2 of ≥0.3.
