To provide a filter press whose filter plates can be opened one after another by virtue of a pair of shifters each connected to a separate cylinder and a towing chain interlocked with a reversible motor equipped with a brake.

The filter press is constituted of a pair of shifters (14, 15) slidably disposed in parallel on a carrier (11) and each connected to work levers (35, 36) of cylinders (33, 34) respectively with the stroke of the work levers (35, 36) made to correspond with a length (L+B) which is the sum of a distance (L) between an opened filter plate (4) and the following filter plate (4) to be opened and the thickness (B) of one filter plate (4). Each of the work levers (35, 36) of a pair of the cylinders (33, 34) is extended and retracted in turns, and the brake of the reversible motor (12) equipped with a brake interlocked with the towing chain (9) is released upon detecting the completion of opening a filter plate (4), and the brake of the reversible motor (12) equipped with a brake is locked upon detecting an increase in the cylinder inner pressure. Hence opening of a filter plate (4) can be carried out by one-way traveling of the one shifter (14) and a time required for opening a filter plate (4) as well as the size of the apparatus for opening the filter plates (4) can be reduced.
