To facilitate maintenance check and replacement of the filter cloth in a filter press in which the filter cloth is freely movable relative to the filter plates.

An upper bar 3 is laid between the upper parts of the front and back machine frames 1 and 2 to latch and suspend the suspension arm 21 of each filter plate 12 in a freely back-and-forth slidable way. A driving shaft 34 is arranged in parallel on the upper bar 3, and the first and second pulleys 33a and 33b which rotate with the driving shaft and are freely slidable in the longitudinal direction of the driving shaft are borne with the driving shaft. Traction wires 31 and 32 to be tied to the upper and lower ends of filter cloths 29 and 30 covering the front and back surfaces of the filter plate are wound separately onto the pulleys. On opening of the plate, the filter plate is moved along the upper bar 3 to open the plate. The first and second pulleys 33a and 33b are made to move along the driving shaft 34 through the suspension arm 21 of the filter plate, and the filter cloth 29 and 30 are made to travel up and down through rotation of the driving shaft.
