PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fine particles, consisting of cellulose II, relatively stable to chemicals and suitable for liquid chromatographic packings, etc., by removing part of water from specific coagulated fine viscose particles, neutralizing the particles and converting the viscose into cellulose.
CONSTITUTION: Part of water is removed from coagulated fine viscose particles consisting of (A) 10W60wt% cellulosic component, (B) 90W35wt% water and (C) 0W5wt% water-soluble high polymer, e.g. sodium polyacrylate, etc., using, e.g. a saturated sodium sulfate solution. The resultant particles are then neutralized and regenerated with sulfuric acid, etc., to convert the viscose into cellulose. The above-mentioned fine particles are then separated and, as necessary, subjected to removal of the component (C), desulfurization, washing and drying to provide the aimed fine cellulosic particles in a (spheroidal) spherical form with ≤300μ average particle diameter, consisting substantially of cellulose II and having 5W35wt% crystallinity (measured by X-ray diffractometry) and ≤3,000 excluded limiting molecular weight measured by using PEG.
