At the time of registering a template fingerprint image, a plurality of fingerprint image data of fingertips whose positional relations are different are stored in a flash memory 6 as template fingerprint image data P1, P2 and P3. At the time of authenticating fingerprints, the fingerprint image data are fetched from a fingerprint sensor 1. The fingerprint image data fetched from the fingerprint sensor 1 are collated with the plurality of template fingerprint image data P1, P2 and P3 by a collating engine 7. Thus, it is possible to carry out the collating operation without considering any position deviation, and to reduce the detection area of the fingerprint sensor.
