To obtain a flame retardant and antibacterial nonwoven fabric not causing bleedout, excellent in durability of antibacterial property and useful e.g. for filter by including a specific flame retardant and antibacterial fiber in a specific amount.
This nonwoven fabric contains 60-100 wt.% flame retardant and antibacterial fiber having a hydrolyzed residue of a phosphorcontaining compound of the formula [wherein R1 is 8 monovalent ester-forming functional group; R2 and R3 are each a halogen, a 1-10C hydrocarbon or R1; A is a bivalent or trivalent, organic residue; (n1) is 1 or 2 and; (n2) and (n3) are each 0-4] on its side chain and containing 100-50,000 ppm phosphorus, and has a bacteriostatic activity value of ≥2.0 and an LOI value of ≥27. It is preferable to produce a filter having at least one layer of the flame retardant and antibacterial nonwoven fabric having ventilation resistance of 0.1-3 mm aq. at 5 cm/s and capturing 60% air dust of 2 μm diameter and to produce the flame retardant and antibacterial nonwoven fabric by the hydrolysis treatment of a nonwoven fabric containing a polyester fiber having a phosphorus content of 100-50,000 ppm and copolymerized with a phosphorus compound exhibiting antibacterial property by hydrolysis.
