PURPOSE: To discriminate the existence and the type of a recording medium at the same time and at real time and to eliminate a sensor for detecting the loading of the recording medium by logically operating logical outputs which are outputted by plural sensors and used for discriminating the recording medium and detecting whether the recording medium is loaded or not.

CONSTITUTION: A flexible disk device 10 can record and reproduce the data with respect to the recording media of three types such as a 2DD type, a 2HD type and a 2ED type. The 2HD sensor 13 and the 2ED sensor 15 which consist of a microswitch or the like and which are provided with pins 14 and 16 which can be elevated and lowered are provided on a base 11, for example. When the recording medium is loaded to the device 10, the pins 14 and 16 are elevated and lowered according to the existence of the discrimination hole of the loaded recording medium and a logical signal is outputted by the sensors 13 and 15. Based on the pattern of the logical signal output, the type of the loaded recording medium is discriminated and the logical output is ANDed by an arithmetic circuit at the same time. Then, it is detected whether the recording medium is loaded or not.
