PURPOSE: To reduce the friction of a floating magnetic head in its start mode by providing a projection having the surface roughness of the opposite magnetic recording medium to together with the height lower than the head floating height at the end part of the air flow-in side on the floating surface of a slider.
CONSTITUTION: Small projections 34 are provided at both end parts of the air flow-in sides of rails 31 and 33 set at both sides of the floating surface of a slider, i.e., at the end parts opposite to a head main body. It is desirable to set the height (h) of the projection 34 at about 1/5 floating height of the head at the air flow-in side. If the height (h) is larger than said value, the projection 34 may have a mistaken contact with the surface of a recording medium in a record/reproduction mode or lose the floating balance to deteriorate the floating stability. The slider has a contact with a recording medium 1 via the projection 34 and has an extremely small contact area. As a result, the rubbing friction of a magnetic head is extremely reduced against the disk surface in a floating process. This secures the satisfactory drive of the head.
