PURPOSE: To handle various floppy disks which differ in directory size flexibly by providing a means which sets a directory side definition area and an analyzing means which analyzes the contents of the definition area and a directory area.
CONSTITUTION: A floppy disk FD is initialized by an initialization control part 4. Namely, formatting in which format information is written on the FD is carried out firstly. Consequently, the physical format of the FD is generated and then the size of a directory is written in the directory size definition part of the FD. The size is determined by selecting one of two kinds and the size of the directory part 8 of the FD and the size of a data part 9 are determined. A directory analyzing part 5 reads the directory size recorded in the directory size definition part 7 and a specified file is retrieved in the directory part 8 to read information regarding the file, so that a data input/output part 6 reads the data out of the FD.
