PURPOSE: To provide a fluid type retarder device positively having a self-pump action.

CONSTITUTION: A case 3 fixed to a vehicle body side member and filling an operating fluid to a retarder chamber 4 storing a rotor 6 and a stator 5 and a clutch device 13 capable of engaging or disengaging a rotary shaft 10 and the rotor 6 are provided, and pump vanes 18, 19 feeding the operating fluid to an operating fluid outlet 9b are formed on the side face of the rotor 6 opposite to the stator 5. The residual pressure in the connecting direction can be applied to the clutch device 13 when it is cut off. When a fluid type retarder device causing the temperature rise of the operating fluid is operated, the operating fluid can be replaced, i.e., the temperature rise of the operating fluid can be prevented. A force-feed oil pump can be miniaturized or omitted. When the residual pressure is applied to the clutch device 13, the slow circulation of the operating fluid is generated during the nonoperating period, and the temperature rise of the operating fluid can be prevented more effectively.
