PURPOSE: To provide a simple and cheap fluorescent character display tube having clean fluorescent surface edges, with which the area dispersion is less, by trimming the fluorescent surface afterward even in case the fluorescent surface first formed on the electrode surface involves rough edges and large area dispersion.

CONSTITUTION: The part 5 in the attached illustration exhibits unnecessary portion of attached fluorescent substance particles as a fluorescent surface. The part as surrounded by broken lines 6 corresponds to fluorescent substance particles 3 attached to the electrode 2. Even though area dispersion of this part is large or its edges are rough, the part is covered later with an insulative film 4, so that the area and location fluorescent surface 3' can be controlled with the accuracy at which the insulative film 4 is formed.
