NEW MATERIAL: A compound of the formula (E1-2 is CH3, CH2OH, etc.; W is H, OH or COOH; X is H, Me, a halogen, etc.; Y is -O-, -NMe- etc.; Z1-4 is H, a halogen or Me; Q1-2 is R1R2N- R1R2N+-etc.; R1-2 is H, ME, Et, etc.).

EXAMPLE: (9-(6-Hydroxy-4-bis(carboxymethyl)amino-3-(2-(2-bis(carboxymethyl) amino-5-methylphenoxy)ethoxy)phenyl)-6-dimethylamino-3H-xanthen-3-(ylidene) dimethylammonium.

USE: Fluorescent indicator dyes for calcium varying absorption and luminescence combined with Ca+2 ion.

PROCESS: The fluorescent indicator dye for calcium consisting of at last one kind of tricyclic chromophore is obtained by coupling a tetracarboxylate Ca+2 chelating compound having the octacoordinate pattern of liganding groups of BAPTA [1,2-bis(2-amino-phenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid].
