This fluorescent lamp is provided with a narrow and long transparent airtight vessel 1 having the inside diameter of Di and the outside diameter of Do, a phosphor layer 4 disposed an inner side of the airtight vessel 1, discharge medium sealed inside the airtight vessel 1, paired electrodes 3 and 5 so disposed as to cause discharge of the discharge medium inside the airtight vessel 1, and a light shielding film 6 so disposed on the outer surface of the airtight vessel 1 that the width W extending along the tube axial direction forms the aperture 7 for leading the light satisfying the following inequality. The internal electrode 3 is connected to a power incoming terminal 8a and the external electrode 5 is connected to a power incoming terminal 8b, where Di<W<Do.
