To obtain a fluorine-based copolymer capable of manifesting a high solubility in solvents and readily forming a coating film excellent in impact and fouling resistances, etc., and useful as a solvent-soluble type coating material by including a fluoroolefin unit and limiting the molecular weight and the distribution of the molecular weight within specific ranges.
This fluorine-based copolymer is obtained by polymerizing (A) a fluoroolefin with (B) a monomer having a cross-linking site (e.g. the monomer having OH, carboxy, an organosilicon group having a hydrolyzable group, a β-keto ester group or epoxy group) and (C) other monomers (e.g. the monomer having ≥2 polymerizable unsaturated bonds in the molecule). The copolymer is regulated so as to respecitively provide 1,000-40,000 number-average molecular weight (Mn), 100,000-500,000 weight-average molecular weight (Mw) and ≥4 ratio of the molecular weights Mw/Mn.
