PURPOSE: To provide the subject new compound exhibiting excellent characteristics as a pigment component for fluoro coatings, etc., or as a functional pigment such as a dichroismic pigment for polarizing films and further useful as an intermediate for fl uorine-containing quinone dyestuffs.
CONSTITUTION: A fluorine-containing quinizarin derivative of formula I [Rf is 1-12C perfluoroalkyl, perfluoroalkenyl; X is single bond, -O-, etc.; A is group of formula II or III (Z is 1-5C alkyl; n is 0-2)], e.g. a compound of formula IV. The compound is obtained by reacting a fluorine-containing phthalic anhydride derivative of formula V with a halogenated phenol or halogenated naphthol of formula Vl or VII (Y is halogen) in the presence of a reaction accelerator preferably at 160-220°C under heating. The reaction accelerator is preferably a mixture of sulfuric acid with boric acid, and the weight ratio of the fluorine- containing phthalic acid: sulfuric acid: boric acid is 1:5-20:0.1-0.3.
