To obtain a fluoroalkenyl compound useful for liquid crystal compositions and liquid crystal devices using them by introducing a F atom at an allyl site of an alkenyl group.
This liquid crystal composition used for liquid crystal devices comprises a compound of formula I (R1 is H, cyano, etc.; R2 is a 1-12C alkyl, etc.; R3 is 1-12 alkyl, etc.; A1-A3 are each formula II, etc.; Z1-Z3 are each -C=C-, -CH-CH-, etc.; X1-X8 are each CH, CF, etc.; Y1-Y4 are each H or F; (n) is 1-4; (m), (p) and (q) are each 0 or 1), which is produced by condensation reaction of a compound of the formula: R1-(A1-Z1)p-(A2-Z2)q-A3-Z3-D (D is -C=CH, etc.) with a compound of formula III (E is a halogen, etc.) at temperature in the range of -70 to 100°C, preferably -45 to 80°C, in a solvent inactive to the reaction, for example, ether-based solvent, such as diethyl ether, or hydrocarbons.
