To obtain a specific new fluorobiphenyl derivative useful as a liquid crystal material with low viscosity, high NI point and highly anisotropic refractive index.
This new compound is shown by formula I (R is a 1-10C alkyl; X is C≡C or CH2-CH2), e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between 4-fluorobiphenyl and an alkylcyclohexyl phenylacetylene in an argon atmosphere in the presence of copper and diethylamine. The new compound, although used as a liquid crystal material singly, is also used in the form of a liquid crystal composition through formulation in a liquid crystal compound, liquid crystal-analogous compound or a mixture thereof (parent liquid crystal). The parent liquid crystal is e.g. a compound of formula III (R3 is H, a 1-8C alkyl or the like; ring A is benzene or cyclohexane; X is a direct bond lone pair of CO-O); when the compound of formula I is to be used in a liquid crystal composition, it is preferable that its amount is 3-50 pts.wt. in 100 pts.wt. of the whole liquid crystal composition.
