Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new fluorocyclohexene derivative applicable to liquid crystal display devices with wide angle of field of view because of being capable of obtaining a liquid crystal composition with reduced refractive index anisotropy which can be driven at low voltages through small addition to a parent liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is 1-16C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl; ring A is 2-fluoro-1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl; ring B is 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4- cyclohexylene; X is F or H; R2 is F, Cl, CN, 1-16C alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkoxyl; where, any H atom(s) in R2 may be substituted by F atom(s)), e.g. 2-fluoro-1-(4- propylphenyl)-4-propylcyclohexene. Of the present compounds, a compound of formula II can be obtained by hydroboration of a compound of formula III into a compound of formula IV, which is then oxidized into a compound of formula V (mixture of cis- and trans-modifications) which is, in turn, fluorinated with a fluorinating agent.
