To produce a fluorocyclohexyltolan derivative useful for a blending component for a liquid crystalline composition, excellent in compatibility and rapid response and having a low viscosity.
This fluorocyclohexyltolan derivative represented by formula I (R is a fluorine-substituted methyl, a fluorine-substituted methoxy, etc.; Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 are each independently fluorine or H; (k) is 1 or 2) and exemplified by 1-{4-(4-fluorocyclohexyl)phenyl}-2-{4-(1-trans-propenyl)phenyl}acetylene. The derivative of formula I is obtained by reacting a cyclohexylbenzene represented by formula II with an acetylene compound represented by formula III under the existence of a metal catalyst and a basic material. The fluorocyclohexyltolan derivative is used for a blending component for a liquid crystalline composition.
