Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal compound being a new fluorocyclopropane derivative having high upper limit temperature of liquid crystal phase and not having so large dielectric anisotropy and capable of lowering threshold voltage of a composition by addition thereof.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I(R1 is 1-12C alky1; R2 is H or a 1-7C alky1; Z1 and Z2 each is a single bond or CH2CH2, with the proviso that at least either one is a single bond; a ring A is 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4- phenylene which may be substituted with ≤2 fluorine atoms; X1 and X2 each is H or F; two substituent groups of cyclohexane ring has trans configuration), e.g. trans-1-fluoro-2-[4-[trans-4-(trans-4propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl]phenyl]cyclopropane. The compound is obtained by reacting a (1- alkenyl)benzene derivative with fluorodiiodomethane in the presence of a dialkylzinc. The compound is chemically stable to heat, light, water, etc., and excellent also in compatibility with a mother liquid crystal.
