A focal plane shutter 1 comprises: a base plate 10 having an opening 11; a front curtain driving lever 40A which is oscillatably supported on the base plate 10, is energized by a driving spring from a start end toward a terminal end of an oscillation range, and drives a front curtain 20A for opening and closing the opening 11; and a setting member 60 which rotates in a first direction to position the front curtain driving lever 40A at the start end and then rotates in a second direction. The setting member 60 rotating in the second direction comes in contact with the front curtain driving lever 40A to diminish the energization force of the driving spring so that the front curtain driving lever 40A is moved from the start end toward the terminal end.
