A focal plane shutter comprises a substrate having an aperture, a curtain for opening and closing the aperture, a rotor of an actuator for driving the curtain, an output member rotated by the rotor and having a first gear unit, a driving member having a second gear unit meshing with the first gear unit and rotating around a prescribed axis to drive the curtain, and a positioning unit which comes into contact with the driving member to define one end of the rotating range of the driving member. The first and second gear units and the positioning unit overlap one another in the planar direction orthogonally crossing the axis.
