To provide the focus adjusting unit of an image pickup device which can perform zooming, focus adjustment, blur prevention, etc., in a short response time with simple constitution, small power consumption, and low noise without mechanically moving a lens.
This unit is equipped with a distance measuring means which detects the quantity of defocusing up to a subject by using subject luminous flux passed through a photographic optical system 51', ≥1 optical elements 2, 3, 4, and 2' which are arranged in an optical path for the distance measurement and guide the incident light from the subject to an image pickup element 7 or a distance measuring sensor 9 after deflecting it, a variable-shape mirror 4 which constitutes at least one of the optical elements and changes a way of deflecting the light according to an applied voltage, and a voltage applying means which applies the voltage according to the distance measurement output of the distance measuring means. Prior to the distance measurement by the distance measuring means, the optical deflecting operation of the optical characteristic variable optical elements is set to a specific value.
