In contrast AF control before regular photography, the focusing position of a focus lens 2a is detected by most preferentially using an AF evaluated value acquired by using a high-pass filter 601 among the high-pass filter 601 and band pass filters 602 and 604 provided in an AF circuit 600 and having different frequency characteristic from each other. Since the focusing controller is set to preferentially use the HPF 601 extracting a component in a high frequency band increasing in image data by considering it as important when photographing a usual subject, the accurate focusing control is performed for the various subjects.
