PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure optimum follow-up control when a follow-up control objective leading car is changed shortening an inter-vehicle distance by interruption from the other lane or by a lane change of the self vehicle, in the case of follow-up control to the leading car.
SOLUTION: By turning an inter-vehicle distance sensor in a range of prescribed angle, an inter-vehicle distance LY from a follow-up objective leading car is detected, and an inter-vehicle distance L from the change-destined follow-up objective leading car is detected, in addition a relative speed ΔV to the follow-up objective leading car is measured. When a change of the follow-up objective leading car is detected to be based on the inter-vehicle distance LY and the relative speed ΔV, a car width direction change speed VX of the change-destined follow-up objective leading car is measured, based on this measurement, a follow-up objective car change control gain KLC is calculated, to be set as the control gain in lieu of an ordinary control gain KLU, sensitivity of inter-vehicle distance arithmetic treating is changed in accordance with the car width direction change speed VX, follow-up control at interruption time or at lane change time of a self vehicle is adjusted to an optimum condition.
