Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set an optimum target vehicle-to-vehicle distance according to a travel state by individually setting a target vehicle-to-vehicle distance in a low vehicle speed range and a target vehicle-to-vehicle distance in a high vehicle speed range in follow-up travel control of following a preceding vehicle.
SOLUTION: When the preceding vehicle is traveling at high speed in the captured state of the preceding vehicle, a changeover weighting factor W(k) is set to '0' to compute the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance L* on the basis of the target vehicle-to- vehicle distance VH in the high vehicle speed range. In this state, when the vehicle speed Vt of the preceding vehicle becomes a specified low speed value VL1 or less, the changeover weighting factor W(k) is increased to gradually change the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance L* from the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance VH in the high vehicle speed range to the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance VL in the low vehicle speed range, and the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance L* of specified value is set at the stop of the preceding vehicle. When accelerating from the stop state, the target vehicle speed L* is slowly increased in accordance with an accelerating characteristic straight line with an easy gradient, and when the vehicle speed Vt of the preceding vehicle exceeds a specified high speed value VH, the target vehicle-to vehicle distance L* is gradually changed to the target vehicle-to-vehicle distance VH in the high vehicle speed range.
