PURPOSE: To obtain a food and drink containing extract of Gymnema tingenens with water, alcohol, etc., capable of reasonably suppressing the sugar absorption through the intestines, preventing the obesity without causing troubles in daily life and preventing diseases caused by diabetes and obesity.
CONSTITUTION: Distilled water is added to the leaves of Gymnema tingenens (a plant native to India and belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae, genus Gymnema) and heated at 80°C for 5hr under stirring. The extracted liquid is filtered with a piece of gauze and then with a filter paper to obtain an aqueous extract of Gymnema tingenens. As an alternative, the dried leaves of Gymnema tingenens are extracted with ethanol. The aqueous or ethanol extract is used as the objective food or drink for suppressing the absorption of sugar, capable of effectively suppressing the absorption of sugar through the intestines without causing the paralysis of the sense to feel sweetness, preventing the obesity without causing troubles in daily life, avoiding diseases such as diabetes and preventing various diseases caused by obesity.
