PURPOSE: To form a catalyst bed containing no fine powder by supplying a granular activated carbon carrier catalyst while supplying a solvent in a slurrying vessel to overflow a part of the solvent with powder contained in the catalyst and depositing the catalyst in the catalyst slurry in a catalyst vessel.
CONSTITUTION: The slurrying vessel 5 having a catalyst supply opening 6 and an overflow opening 7 at the upper part and a solvent supply opening at the bottom part is provided. And when the granular activated carbon carrier catalyst is supplied from the supply opening 6 to the slurrying vessel 5 and is slurried to flow in the catalyst vessel 1, the solvent is supplied from the supply opening 8 to slurry the catalyst while overflowing a part of the solvent from the overflow opening 7. And at this time, the catalyst descending in the vessel 5 is allowed to contact countercurrently with the solvent ascending to overflow and fine powder stuck to the catalyst is stripped from the catalyst and removed by the ascending solvent. The catalyst is settled in the catalyst bed, the solvent flows out of the vessel and the closely packed catalyst bed is formed.
