Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain cleaved surface of single crystal excellent as a probe of scanning tunnel microscope having acute top end part by nipping top end of rod-like single crystal fixed of lower end part with nipping with a jig from a direction parallel to desired cleaved surface and rotating said jig in a way of pushing down the top end part of the rod-like single crystal. CONSTITUTION:For instance, a single crystal rod having a large diameter is produced from a high-melting metallic compound composed of carbide or carbo- nitride, etc., of transition metal having NaCl-type crystal structure by floating zone method, etc. Then, said single crystal rod is cut to obtain a rod-like single crystal 1 having square pillar shape of 5.0-1mm thickness or cylinder of 5-0.1mm diameter. Next, the lower end part of said single crystal 1 is fixed by nipping with a jig 2 and nipped with a jig 4 composed of two pieces of metallic plates, etc. Then, the single crystal 1 is cleaved in a way of pushing down the top end part of the single crystal 1 with rotating said jig 4. As a result, formed cleaved surface has an acute top end and is excellent as a probe of scanning tunnel microscope.
