Title:
FORMATION OF SILICON NITRIDE WHISKER AND PRODUCTION OF HIGHLY HEAT RESISTANT NON-OXIDE CERAMIC COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3093667
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form silicon nitride whiskers while effectively utilizing a domestic ore and to produce a ceramic composite reinforced with the whiskers.
SOLUTION: A silica-base ore contg. carbon, magnesium oxide, titania, diiron trioxide, sodium oxide, alumina potassium oxide and water is crushed, mixed with carbon, fed to a reactor and brought into reaction for 20-85hr under heating at 1,350-1,500°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to form and grow the objective silicon nitride whiskers on the outside of the reactor. Silicon nitride powder, unreacted silica, unreacted alumina and other residue are left in the reactor and then brought into reaction in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to form highly heat resistant ceramic powder. This powder is mixed with the whiskers to produce the objective highly heat resistant nonoxide ceramic composite reinforced with the silicon nitride whiskers.
