Abstract:

PURPOSE: To make the visual angle and contrast of upper and lower layers the same by combining the liquid crystal cell of the upper layer and the liquid crystl cell of the lower layer in such a way that the long axes of the liquid crystals and the absorption axes of polarizing plates are made coincident in the liquid crystal of the upper layer and that the short axes of the liquid crystals and the absorption axes of polarizing plates are made coincident in the liquid crystal cell of the lower layer.

CONSTITUTION: The long axies of liquid crystals 14a, 14b and the absorption axes 15a, 16a of polarizing plates 15, 16 are made coincident in the liquid crystal cell of an upper layer. The short axes of liquid crystals 24a, 24b and the absorption axes 16a, 26a of polarizing plates 16, 26 are made coincident in the liquid crystal cell of the lower layer. The liquid crystals 14, 24 of the upper and lower layer have therefore the same axis and the same visual angle. The absorption axes 16a, 26a of the polarizing plates 16, 26 are made coincident with the short axis of the liquid crystal 24 in a liquid crystal display element 20 of the lower layer. The contrast decreases consequently slightly as compared to a light crystal display element 10 but the decreased component is apparently corrected by the influence of the shadow on a reflecting plate 27. The contrast of the upper and lower layers is thus made uniform.
