To provide a damper for damping substantially horizontal movement or torsion in a building.
The invention relates to the damper and a method of protecting a building and a similar structure system from a kinetic load such as a load resulting from an earthquake, high wind, or mechanical vibrations. The damper is formed of a plurality of structural members 1, 2 mutually connected by rotary joints 6, 8 damped by circular disc shims 3, 5 made of a friction pad material or a viscoelastic material. The relative movement between structural elements is damped by damping of the joints. In particular, the damper is useful for base isolation, for example, in order to allow a building or a machine to move in a movement damped relative to its foundation or in order to allow a cable stay of a cable-stayed bridge to move in a movement damped relative to its fixation point on the bridge.
