This friction material comprises a nitrogen acid-based compound as a flame retardant composed of a nitrogen compound and an acid. The nitrogen compound is selected from melamine, ammonium, benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine and ethylenediamine and the acid is selected from phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, sulfamic acid, boric acid, oxalic acid, phthalic acid and cyanuric acid. Specifically, melamine sulfate, melamine polyphosphate, ammonium polyphosphate, etc., are cited as the nitrogen acid- based compound.
