The friction regulating agent for a lubricating oil is composed of an oil-soluble copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of ≥3,000 and containing a unit of at least one monomer (a) expressed by general formula (1), CH2=C(R1)-Q-(Z-A1)m-X and a unit of at least one monomer (b) expressed by general formula (2), CH2=C(R3)-CO-(O-A2)n-OR4 (X is PH2, NH2 or (O)a-P(=O)b(OR2)2; one of (a) and (b) is 1 and the other is 0 or 1; R2 is H, an alkyl or the like; R1 and R3 are each H or methyl; Z is O or NH; A1 and A2 are each an alkylene; (m) is an integer of 0-50; Q is CO or a hydrocarbon group; (n) is an integer of 0-30; and R4 is an alkyl or the like).
