To provide a friction type continuously variable transmission capable of preventing spin loss, reducing contact face pressure with a sun member to prolong its service life, and increasing contact face pressure with a ring member to prevent occurrence of slip and having a planetary member having stable attitude.
This friction type continuously variable transmission 10 is provided with a housing 21, an input shaft 11 provided rotatably for the housing 21 and having a cone-shaped outer peripheral face 11b, an output ring 13 provided concentrically with the input shaft 11 so as to rotate relatively and movable in the axial direction, and a plurality of intermediate rollers 12 arranged between the input shaft 11 and the output ring 13 and capable of rolling and coming into contact by the outer peripheral face 11b of the input shaft 11 and an inner peripheral face of the output ring 13. Each intermediate roller 12 has a recessed part 36d provided in a central part in its axial direction and inscribed in the output ring 13 and two conical faces 36a, 36b provided on both sides in the axial direction of the recessed part 36d, circumscribed about the outer peripheral face 11b of the input shaft 11, and having conical center agreeing with conical center of the outer peripheral face 11b of the input shaft 11.
