To provide a friction welded member which is cut at the position away from a welded part by at least a specified value in the case of being subjected to a tensile test across the welded part, and which is excellent in tensile strength of the welded part, reduced in weight and high in function.
A steel member 2 and a spheroidal graphite cast iron member 3 are friction welded to each other to form a friction welded member 1. The friction welded member 1 is allowed to be cut in the tensile test at the position away from a welded part 4 by at least 0.1 mm. Regarding the shape of the welded part 4, a groove 3b is of V-shaped section in the axial direction, and a projection 2b is of L-shape. At least one of the steel 2 and the spheroidal graphite cast iron member 3 is hollow. A heat affected zone of the spheroidal graphite cast iron member 3 is preferably ≤10% in martensitic area ratio of a base matrix except graphite, and more preferably, ≤1%. The friction welded member 1 is suitable for a lower arm, a torque rod, a propeller shaft, and an axle housing. The welded part 4 is cooled in the temperature range of 780-680°C at the cooling speed of 4°C/second.
