A fuel cell 10 includes: a laminated power generation unit 110; an end plate 230 arranged at one end of a laminated unit cell; a pressing plate 220 arranged at the other end of the laminated unit cell; and a control part 400 for changing a fastening load between the end plate and the pressing plate 220. The power generation unit 110 has a membrane electrode assembly 120; gas diffusion layers 132, 133 arranged on both faces of the membrane electrode assembly; porous body gas passages 142, 143 arranged on a side of the gas diffusion layer opposite to the membrane electrode assembly; and separator plates 152, 153 arranged on a side of the porous body gas passage opposite to the gas diffusion layer. The control part changes the fastening load between the end plate and the pressing plate according to a power generation state of the fuel cell to change an aperture ratio of the porous body gas passage in a direction for flowing the gas.
