To improve the service durability of a cooling water circulation passage.
Disclosed is a fuel cell system for generating electric power by supplying an anode gas and a cathode gas to a fuel cell, the system comprising: a coolant circulation passage in which a coolant for cooling the fuel cell circulates; a circulation pump provided in the coolant circulation passage for circulating the coolant; a reservoir tank for reserving the coolant therein, the inside pressure thereof maintained at atmospheric pressure; an on-off valve provided in the coolant circulation passage on the intake side of the circulation pump, the on-off valve opening to supply the coolant inside the reservoir tank into the coolant circulation passage when the pressure inside the coolant circulation passage becoming less than a predetermined negative pressure; a communication passage for connecting the reservoir tank to the on-off valve; circulation pump control means (S5) for gradually increasing rotational speed of the circulation pump when starting a circulation of the coolant by driving the circulation pump.
