To provide a fuel cell, having the rate of utilization of an electricity generation area as high as possible, by suppressing abnormal overheat in the course of generating electricity in the peripheral area of a fuel cell unit in which no cooling medium flow passage is present in a separator, to thereby effectively improving the rate of utilization of an electrode area.
The fuel cell includes the fuel cell unit 10, consisting of a membrane electrode assembly 3, gas translucent layers on both sides thereof, the separator 7, and a gasket 8 including a manifold M where first catalytic layers 2b and 2'b are formed at a center region, corresponding to an inner side between an opening for supplying a gas and an opening for exhausting gas formed in the separator 7; and second catalytic layers 2a and 2'a, with a low resistance which contribute to heat generation more than the first catalytic layers 2b and 2'b, are formed on the peripheral region outside the center region.
