To provide a fuel cell which enables the enhancement in power generation performance, and a seal material for such a fuel cell.SOLUTION: A fuel cell comprises: a fuel electrode to be supplied with a fuel gas; an oxidant electrode to be supplied with an oxidant gas; a polyelectrolyte film disposed between the fuel electrode and the oxidant electrode so as to be in contact with the fuel electrode and the oxidant electrode; a fuel gas channel plate disposed on the fuel electrode so as to be in contact with the fuel electrode on a side opposite to the polyelectrolyte film, and serving to supply the fuel gas to the fuel electrode; an oxidant gas channel plate disposed on the oxidant electrode so as to be in contact with the oxidant electrode on a side opposite to the polyelectrolyte film, and serving to supply an oxidant gas to the oxidant electrode; a fuel electrode seal material disposed around the fuel electrode and serving to prevent the fuel gas from leaking; and an oxidant electrode seal material disposed around the oxidant electrode and serving to prevent the oxidant gas from leaking. In at least one of the fuel electrode and the oxidant electrode, a first area of contact with the polyelectrolyte film is different from a second area of contact with the gas channel plate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
