Abstract:

PURPOSE: To ensure stability of control by a method wherein first and second feedback correction factors are calculated by using first and second control rules having difference responsiveness and when an engine valve is switched to a second operating state, the second feedback correction factor is selected to correct a feed fuel amount.
CONSTITUTION: When a feedback correction factor is computed by a control unit 34 based on the output of an LAF sensor 54 to calculate a feed fuel amount, a first feedback correction factor is calculated by using a first gradualness type control rule so that an exhaust air-fuel ratio coincides with a target air-fuel ratio. Further, a second feedback correction factor is calculated by using a second control rule, inferior to a first control rule in responsiveness, preferably a PID control rule so that the exhaust air-fuel ratio coincides with a target value. When the valve timing of an engine valve is switched to the high speed side by a variable timing mechanism 300, the second feedback correction factor is selected to correct a feed fuel amount.
